Hot off the presses is “Kayak Essentials”, a new DVD from kayakers and coaches Nick Cunliffe and Matt Giblin.
Filmed in North Wales during the summer of 2008 and 2009, this new instructional DVD focuses on the foundation kayaking skills that underpin more advanced performance in rough water.
“There have been plenty of white water and sea kayaking videos in the past”, explains Nick, “but there were no well-filmed, quality DVDs that properly presented the fundamentals of effective kayaking for the beginner and intermediate paddler.
We set out to fill this gap, to create a resource for improvers, advanced paddlers and coaches”.
They seem to have done this in style, with a 95-minute DVD of action, analysis, coaching tips, progressions and challenges.
14 chapters focus on core paddling skills, filmed in a wide variety of flat water, white water, sea surf venues. White water kayaks and sea kayaks feature throughout, reflecting the current popularity of these branches of the sport.
Additional chapters include the fundamentals of effective kayaking, stroke linking and advice on making the best use of the vast amount of coaching material.
The DVD reflects the wealth of kayaking and coaching experience that Nick and Matt, both highly-qualified BCU Coaches, have gained over the years.
It wasn’t all plain sailing however, as Matt points out:
“We spent an enormous number of days planning, filming and editing over the last 18 months. Bad weather and equipment failure got in the way at times, but we finally crossed the finish line!
The DVD has already gained favourable comment from its video clips at the Kayak Essentials website, with endorsements from a growing number of paddlers and coaches.
