hello! i'd like to ask for tips about coming in because i have a sit on & i have already been wiped out for a couple of times. i don't see it as a problem, but it annoys me so much!!! i recall the very first time a 4' wave lifted the back up from behind and it spun me around. the other is that i was almost pushed sideways by waves that are only about 2' high! i love this sport, getting out isnt a problem at all but getting in seems to tell me in advance whether or not i can go out.

then maybe you are talking about picking up waves? Keep things straight using a stern rudder on whatever side is needed.. that's the key! if you are being turned sideways, you should support the paddle flat on top of or in the wave & then edge the boat over towards the wave.. it's always so much harder to be on a sit on kayak than those where you have normal leverage with your legs.

it's simply about PRACTICE.

it might be a little awkward but you can always play first before heading straight outside. find a spot & practice on smaller white breakers. a little fancy, yes, but it can help with anyone's technique to play in the smaller field where you got more time & easier control..

and try to stab the wave face with your paddle as you try to lean down hard on it. after that, it should be possible to balance the wave power trying to roll you into the beach and your weight on the brace. so there... after you got it all sorted in the shallow areas, then it's time for you to head outside!

big waves cannot be easily fought from a sit on kayak, esp if you get dumped-on. you only have to either sit tight, keep upright, & wait until you re-surface, or..SWIM!!!!

thanks for all of these, I learned from everything you shared. I've been reading some kayaking techniques from other sources too. And some of what you are saying were also mentioned by other kayaking experts.
