I plan on going to Long Island for a surf kayak. My problem though, is that... I have no experience yet on that. I've only been going for whitewater kayaking. And i've tried surfing too.. But a combination of both? Not yet..
What kayaking techniques must i apply to get pass through the waves once they start to break? I wouldn't want my head to be smashed.. So what are the things i should expect?
Sorry for having alot of questions. I'm just excited!!

Haven't tried it yet. But they say it's all about timing.. And that as a beginner, you have to study the movement & the patterns of the waves. But as a beginner too, wait for the large waves to pass first because it's always better to practice on the smaller ones.

As a starter, avoid big or steep waves.. You can begin with small wave surfing, those that aren't too big for your ability as a beginner.. Avoid other surfers too (as much as possible).. For safety purposes, do not allow yourself to be pushed.. Maintain a distance. Otherwise, it may only cause you damages..

NEVER FORGET to bring life jackets because for sure, the currents are strong and they can easily take you out once your surf kayak flips! It also counts to make rescue more successful. They are good cushions for your body if you'd ever slam on something.
As for launching, position ur surf kayak on the beach in such a way that it directly faces the waves. Then make sure you can push urself off & not be knocked off by the waves. Once you're done launching, paddle as hard as u could.
AND lastly, it's always a nice idea to wear ur helmet.
