Kayaking Gear & Equipment - Kayaking Accessories
There are other tools and pieces of gear which may not be required to get started with Paddling but are necessary in certain situations. Some can help improve your paddling performance while others can aid in ensuring your safety and enjoyment. Get familiar with the different devices and tools which are very handy in a Kayaking trip:
- Repair kit
This is necessary even in day trips. The items in a repair kit will be able to aid you in small jobs such as repairing a small hole in your Spray Deck.
- Waterproof containers/ bags
Keep valuables dry while paddling by storing them in watertight cases. You can also use a dry bag. This is a waterproof gear bag, usually bright-colored for increased visibility, which is ideal for stowing your extra pieces of Kayaking Clothing and other items. Another ideal container is the polyethylene jar or BDH. This is a screw-top container with a rubber seal designed to keep your items dry.
- First aid kit
This is necessary for any outdoor activity. A basic kit includes bandages, thermometer, plasters, tweezers, adhesive tape, and medicines to relieve headaches and nausea.
- Compass, Map, VHF Radio
In multi-day Kayaking and camping trips, you need a compass and map for navigation and VHF Radio for communication, especially in times of distress.
- Bail bucket or pump
Remove water that accumulated on your Kayak or canoe with the use of a bail bucket or a small cup or container. In Sea Kayaking, a hand pump is used to extract water.
There are a lot more essential pieces of Kayaking Gear that you can carry, depending on how long the trip will be and where will you be paddling. Be fully-equipped before you set out. Do not forget to include these tools in your checklist to ensure a trouble-free Kayaking adventure.
