Kayak Shack Back for Fun-Filled Season

THURSDAY, 25 OCTOBER 2007

The Kayak Shack at Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve, which is managed by the Cape Coral Parks & Recreation Department, opens for the season Saturday.

Residents can buy native plants from the excellent selection or rent a single or a tandem kayak from the Kayak Shack and launch it right into the preserve.

The narrow, sheltered passages give a thrilling day for immediate paddlers. First-time paddlers who want to give it a try are encouraged to sign up for lessons offered by the park staff.

The Beginner’s Guide to Kayaking is one of the most popular programs offered. It teaches basic paddle strokes and controlling the kayak without falling out. Interested participants are advised to register in advance due to limited slots.

Regular operating hours:
Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve is open every day of the year from 8a.m. to dusk.

The Kayak Shack at the preserve is open weekends only, from Oct. 20, through May, and select holidays including Nov. 12, Dec. 26, Dec. 27, and Dec. 28.

Kayak Shack hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and all boats must be back by 4 p.m.

Kayak rental rates:
  • Single kayak: $25 for four hours; $16 for two hours; or $8 per hour for each additional hour
  • Tandem kayak: $35 for four hours; $24 for two hours; $12 per hour any additional hours
The last two hour rental departs at 2 p.m. All boats must be back by 4 p.m. Cash, check, or credit cards are accepted. A driver's license is required and you must be 18 or older to rent. Rental prices include sales tax and equipment. Four hours is the recommended rental choice.

Today, the preserve opens at 8 a.m. The Kayak Shack will also open at 8 a.m. for rentals and native plant sales.

The Tropical Plant Bazaar is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
