Kayaker Dies at Little Egg Harbor
FRIDAY, 28 DECEMBER 2007
A 22-year-old man from Tuckerton, New Jersey was found dead by authorities last Dec. 24 after going out kayaking at Little Egg Harbor.
Robert Gaudiosi Jr. of Edgewater Drive went out in the harbor in a camouflaged kayak Monday afternoon. He was reportedly missing earlier during the day.
Coast Guard Petty Officer First Class George Daws said that the Barnegat Light station received a call about a missing kayak at 2:22 p.m. that day.
The Coast Guard immediately dispatched a H-60 helicopter to an area near Long Point close to Rose Cove to search for the victim. According to authorities, the regional Coast Guard office in Atlantic City also dispatched a helicopter crew along with a 25-foot search and rescue boat to the harbor.
According to Daws, a helicopter found the kayak with the victim's body near a marsh at Rose Point along the Deerfield Park section of Tuckerton at 3:33 p.m. The water was rough for kayaking that day.
The Coast Guard said that the water temperature in that part of the harbor was 47 degrees. Apparently, Gaudiosi was not wearing any cold water survival gear or a life jacket.
The investigation has been handed over to the Tuckerton Police Department.
Gaudiosi Jr. is the second person in three months to die in a kayaking-related accident.
