Cranbourne Students Win at Murray Marathon

Three students from Cranbourne, Australia were members of the winning Murray Marathon kayaking team in the two-person open school relay class last month.
Cranbourne South students Arthur Alger, 18, Eric Alger, 17, and Pearcedale student David Ceddia, 14, were part of the seven-person Woodleigh Water Ratz team from Woodleigh School in Baxter.
The Murray Marathon is one of the longest canoe races in the world, comprising 404 kilometers of the Murray River from Yarrawonga to Swan Hill.
The race, which was a four-day activity, was held last December 27 to 31.
The Woodleigh Water Ratz team, consisting of 13 year-old to 18-year-old kayakers, defeated the teams from Camberwell Grammar and Trinity Grammar, which were all senior boys.
Woodleigh won every day of racing of and finished the event in 28 hours, 23 minutes and 1 second, 16 minutes ahead of Camberwell.
According to Chris Alger, father of Arthur and Eric, the team almost reached record time.
As a bonus for the team, Arthur and Eric, along with teammate Nick Byrne, were selected in the Australian Junior Marathon Kayaking team to take part in two overseas events after the success at national level this year.
The 770 participants in this year's Murray Marathon raised more than $300,000 for the Australian Red Cross.
