Male Kayaker Saved from Oneida River
TUESDAY, 8 JANUARY 2008
A man was rescued from the Oneida River near Brewerton after spending two hours calling for help underneath a dock.
Brewerton Fire Chief Michael Stassi said that the man, in his fifties and name withheld, was kayaking with his girlfriend when his kayak overturned and he surfaced under a dock.
Two hours passed before someone on the northern side of the river heard the man shouting and called 911, Stassi said. Divers hauled him to safety shortly after 6:30 p.m.
The man was brought to the University Hospital. Divers began to search for his girlfriend, but authorities found her at her house. According to her, she had lost sight of her boyfriend and decided to go home.
