WEDNESDAY, 19 MARCH 2008
Over 200 youngsters in Weymouth just got adventurous! In celebration of Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre’s (WOEC) 44th anniversary, an Open Day was organized, providing activities to the local community. It was also during this event that the Knightsdale Road Centre launched their new Saturday morning kayaking club for the children.
The kayak club has been supported by Awards for All and the National Lottery Fund, which gave £10,000 for kayaks, paddles, and a trailer. Staff and members of the Isle of Portland Canoe Club were also present at the Open Day to promote the club to young people who are interested in kayaking.
The fun-filled day included a range of activities such as rock climbing, caving, and orienteering. There were also sessions on Iron Age fire lighting, judo, and belly dancing.
According to WOEC, there more than 200 young people and around 100 adults in the event. Its manager, John Perham, said the Open Day was very successful in spite of the wet weather.
