HARPERSFIELD TOWNSHIP - In celebration of the annual Grand River Canoe and Kayak Race, around 200 enthusiasts paddled down the Grand River on Saturday morning, racing against time. The boats were launched in between one-minute intervals as the racers coursed the 8.5-mile river to finish the line at Hidden Valley MetroPark in Madison Township.
This is the 20th year that Lake MetroParks hosted the race. The event was formerly known as the Mad Hatters Canoe Race, named after a former area canoe/kayak club from 1964 to 1988. To relive the tradition of the Mad Hatters race, the event featured the “maddest hat” contest in which participants are judged on the lunacy of their headgear. The race was not simply a test of speed, but also a display of creativity as shown by the participants wearing outhouses, Rubik’s Cubes, and even lobsters on their heads.
An average racer takes about two hours to complete the race but according to organizers, Saturday’s event could have been a little longer because of the water depth in Grand River. Racers of all skill levels participated in the event since the course was classified as relatively easy.
