HORSESHOE BEND - As a six-year member of the US kayaking team, Devon Barker uses her success in the sport to inspire local kids. Barker and the Idaho River Kids, a non-profit organization based in Eagle, believe that the sport will be a way to keep the youth away from drug abuse.
On Sunday, 15 kayakers will put their skills to the test on the Payette River. "It makes me feel like I'm good at something and I can do something really well and I just really like it," said Ethan McLeod, a teen kayaker. Connor McLeod, another participant, had a similar feeling of being able to excel in the sport and go all the way.
The staff will be composed of volunteers who support the cause. All pieces of kayaking equipment are donated by different sporting good companies.
By motivating Idaho teens, Barker hopes more people will join the organization and follow the same track. She encourages kids to join an empowering sport such as kayaking instead of staying in front of the television or getting hooked on illegal drugs.
