Several AIDS service organizations were successful in inspiring 88 kayakers to raise thousands of dollars and fight HIV/AIDS.
Kayakers, young and old, set off from Pier 40 in South Beach Marina Harbor in San Francisco at the third annual “People Paddle” event last Sunday. Formed in 2006, People Paddle is a consortium of individuals dedicated to combining kayaking with fundraising. According to reports, the group has so far raised $16,000 and is expected to exceed last year’s fundraising total of $22,000.
Healing Waters, an AIDS service organization whose mission is to empower, inspire, and enrich the lives of HIV/AIDS victims, performed volunteer coordination and checked the participants’ life jackets. The United States Coast Guard and American Medical Response also helped ensure that the participants were safe, together with other organizations namely One Brick and Alpha Phi Omega which provided volunteer dockworkers, carried kayaks, and helped people into and out of boats.
For the pledges, People Paddle Co-founder Dean McCully designed a unique pledging software that allows donors to choose from multiple beneficiaries such as the Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center, 360: The Positive Care, Center at UCSF (Men of Color Program), AIDS Legal Referral Panel (ALRP), OneBrick, Healing Waters, and others. Healing Waters also provided the banking and database management during the event.
Kayaking is a sport with a strong demographic base and is accessible to people of diverse abilities. Today, more than 25 million are into the recreational sport, while thousands of the avid paddlers are in San Francisco Bay Area.
